Gotcha! by Shelley Hrdlitschka

The Book:  The graduating class has started their annual tradition, the “Bead Game.” School administration bans the activity for everyone’s safety. When the game goes underground, it takes a turn for the worse.

The Author: Shelley discovered her love for children's literature while teaching elementary school in the eighties. Then, while on a parenting leave, she began writing children's stories. It took ten years, but she eventually decided to focus on juvenile and young adult fiction and is now the author of eight multiple award-winning novels, all published with Orca Book Publishers. Her Sun Signs was one of the selections for the Book Club reading list two years ago.

Shelley lives in North Vancouver with the youngest of her three daughters and their menagerie of pets. When she's not writing she can be found hiking, snowshoeing, or hidden away with a book and some good music.

  1. This book seems to be similar to our schools game Chaos, but with a twist. A page turner!

  2. This book, was really hard to put down. At the end of every chapter, you just want to know more. Gotcha teaches us to keep our priorities straight, a game shouldn't come between any type of relationship, winning isn't everything as long as your having fun.

  3. This book was awesome! Yeah Gotcha is a lot like Chaos, though we do not go that far. It was crazy how so many people lost friends over the silly game. It was crazy how the crowd mentality totally took over and they ended up doing all those things to Warren. It seemed a little crazy, how out of hand it got, but the fact is that it is so true. When you are in a big group you just seem to get pulled along. I loved this book. I just could not put it down.

  4. This book was hard to put down--
but it dragged on and on.
I enjoyed reading about the game, and yes, it does go a bit far for just some game highschool seniors play.
When reading the back it sounded more suspenseful,
and when I read the actual book it was quite less.
    Fun to read at first.

  5. I thought this was quite a page turner. Students went pretty far in playing this game! And the bad influence it had on their relationships!
    It was a good read.

  6. Personally, I was surprised at how niave Katie was to the addiction her father struggled with. After all, she is a Gr. 12 student, but yet, she still didn't connect the dots, or have the common sense to ask her dad what he was going to do with the Gotcha money. Also, Katie's mom needed to reconize that Katie was an adult and she had a right to know what was going on with her dad...

This concept of the game gotcha was very entertaining and made for a good book while at the same time demonstrating how trivial things can turn into something massive and ugly. It was a hard book to put down.

  8. This book was extremely good. I didn't understand how Katie didn't know that her father
had a gambling addiction. If i was her i would at least ask my dad where he was putting $2,000.

  10. while this was a fairly good story, i found the writing style was directed to a younger audience. It was something different but it seemed a little farfetched to me.

  11. This book was incredibly hard to put down. The plot was captivating and the author could definitely hold her audience with the need to read more at the end of each chapter. The plot though and part of the way it was written seemed as if it was directed at a slightly younger audience even though it takes place between the seniors at a high school
